5 Different Kinds of Headaches…and How to Help Them

When it comes to managing headaches, you have other options than just popping pain pills. But first, it’s important to figure out what type of headache you’re suffering from.

With over 150 headache possibilities (yes, we said 150!), we break down a few of the most common below to help you better understand their causes.

Rebound headaches. Have you ever reached for aspirin or ibuprofen to treat a headache, only to have the headache return once the pain killer wears off? You may be dealing with a rebound headache, which can be caused by medication overuse.

Sinus headaches. These types of headaches occur when you’re dealing with a sinus infection or sinus inflammation. A sinus headache may be accompanied by other symptoms like fever, stuffy or runny nose with green discharge, and facial pressure.

Migraine headaches. These types of headaches are typically intense and can last for up to three days at a time. Migraines may be one-sided and be so severe that they interfere with your daily activities, bringing associated symptoms like vomiting, light sensitivity and sound sensitivity. Triggers like poor sleep or diet and hormonal changes may cause them to occur.

Caffeine headaches. While you might love coffee, it can leave you feeling worse for wear when the caffeine leaves your system. Caffeine withdrawal is real, and when it happens to you, headache is a common symptom. Caffeine withdrawal headaches typically happen for people who drink a lot of caffeine, as in more than five cups of coffee each day.

Tension headaches. These kinds of headaches are the most common type of headache experienced today, and typically feel like a constant ache in the head. Some people describe it as a pressure in the neck or back of the head. Unlike migraines, they typically do not have nausea or vomiting. Tension headaches may be caused by stress response and chemical changes in the brain.
